It’s been too long, dear Patchwork reader, and I hope you’re all doing OK. I’m not sure where all the time has gone, but between working and teaching and reading the news too much it’s been ages since I shared anything new with you.
But I have been carrying on with my pattern designing for fabric, with this new and slightly brain-breaking idea being my latest experiment…
The pattern is made up of four rooms which slot together to create a seamless pattern, essentially using this method of pattern making.
The drawing of the first room was split into the four diagonal corners of a square and a second room was then drawn in the middle of this square, before splitting the design again into each diagonal corner again, then a third room was added before dividing the design one more time to add the fourth room.
This was somehow both simpler and more confusing than it sounds.
It was fun to design each of these little diorama-like spaces and fill them with little details, as you can see here Peanut makes yet another cameo appearance.
The inspiration behind the design came mostly from my uninteresting but unsquashable desire to have my own home. After 20 years of being a renter I cannot wait to own and paint my own walls, and have the overflowing Pinterest board to prove it.
Other visual influences mixed in with my unatainable House & Garden pins include interiors from Ozu films, Indian miniature paintings and architechtural details in Giotto paintings.
Until my homeowner dreams can come true, I loved arranging these shapes and colours on the page. All of these illustrations were painted in watercolour and then assembled and fiddled with on Procreate and Photoshop.
I’m planning on printing this design onto some fabric and perhaps creating some wall hangings, stay tuned to see how that goes.
Thank you for reading!
Stupendo Eleni!
